I must begin by saying that this blog post is dedicated to you, Rebecca Lee. Becky, rather. This is because without you, none of this would have happened. Becky, you are freaking amazing and I love you :]
To preface, All Time Low is a band I got into when I was in high school. They would probably be classified as a punk/rock type band but a few years back I used to listen to them pretty regularly. Until last week however, I had nearly forgotten that they were even on my Ipod. That is of course until Becky informed myself and two of our other friends that she could get us FREE tickets to an All Time Low concert in Bologna of all places. (Becky's boyfriend is friends with a guy who works as a guitar tech for All Time Low). It was on a Tuesday night at a venue outside of the city walls, not to mention that every Wednesday mornings I have to be up early to teach English for an hour to a group of 12 year-olds at 8:00 in the morning. But the offer was just too good to pass up.
We met in Piazza Maggiore around 9:00 to enjoy the beauty of the Piazza at night and a bottle of wine for a little while before catching a bus that would take us to Estragon, the name of the venue. It was only about a 20 minute bus ride and it was free because of course no one pays the 1 euro that it is supposed to cost to take any of the buses in Bologna. Seriously, it is very common to hop on buses and even trains without buying a ticket. We arrived at the concert with enough time to catch the end of the opening band and then the madness began. The venue was kind of small so it was standing room only, but we managed to find ourselves literally within feet of the stage. I could have touched the lead singer if I had wanted to. As soon as the music started, everyone started jumping and singing at the top of their lungs. I haven't really listened to much of All Time Low's new stuff, but it was an absolutely incredible concert. It was one of those spontaneously planned nights that end up going so much better than you could have ever imagined. I can't stress enough how amazing of a concert it was. Not to mention that it was TOTALLY free. And we got to hang out around the tour buses afterward with Becky's friend before we finally had to head back to Bologna ... at something like 1:00AM.
To say that getting home was a bit difficult would be an understatement. But we made it back safely nonetheless. And somehow, I dont know how, we managed to find a pizza place opened at 2:00AM, and as soon as we saw it there was no doubt in anyone's mind that we would be getting some late night food after hours of dancing and singing. The night couldn't have ended more perfectly.
And in the words of Becky Lee herself, "you guys, this pizza is the only thing we've had to pay for this entire night!"
